Behind Our Lives - A Wonderful, Heart Breaking Trilogy

I've wanted to blog about this series for a while, but I needed to make sure I could do it justice.

Charlene Carr is a fellow indie author, and I read Behind Our Lives (book one) a few years ago because the premise of an emotive, complex story with realistic, non cookie-cutter characters intrigued me. I was completely blown away.

Women's fiction is a genre I enjoy, but I often find the plots somewhat disposable and they don't always keep my attention. This trilogy, from the first chapter, hooked me in with the complexities of the characters and the sheer subtleties of emotion that broke my heart at every turn. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of the last book, The Stories We Tell, and I devoured it. I'd wanted to take my time, as I didn't want to close the book on these characters, but I just couldn't put it down.

Since then, I have gifted copies of the books to anyone I know who enjoys reading, and am now excited to read more of Charlene's novels. This trilogy was surprising, heart-warming and unexpected in many ways.

Essentially, the story is about friendship and love, but it's more than that. There are themes of family, mental health and loss, and if you like your characters gritty, authentic and fully developed to the point where you imagine stepping into the novels to join them, I urge you to take a chance on this series. Charlene Carr is an indie author with many titles released, and I hope to one day be producing work that others find as engaging and powerful as I found this.
